Grisaille (grɪʼzaɪ, -ʼzeɪl; French: gris, grey) is a term for painting executed entirely in monochrome or near-monochrome, usually in shades of grey. It is particularly used in large decorative schemes in imitation of sculpture.. Many grisailles in fact include a slightly wider colour range. This technique has its roots in ancient times but was mostly applied from the 15th to the 18th century.
Art Deco Tango: the First World War was over. With renewed commitment, the wealthy surrounded themselves with smart design and partied into the late night. Graceful dances like the foxtrot, charleston, and especially the exotic tango, brought the dancers in ecstasy. The moralists frowned. The Art Deco Style and Argentine Tango seemed born for each other.
Besides the passion, the sorrow for lost love, nostalgia, resentment and loss of innocence theme of the Argentine tango. The feelings are intense: black and white.
The inspiration for the painting series "Tango at Sea" was created during a number of times we stayed in the seaside resort of Ostend. Some of the nostalgic atmosphere of the early 20th century still lives there.
